When Words Aren’t the Whole Story

Equine-assisted therapy is an experiential, body-based approach where working with horses on the ground, not riding, helps your nervous system practice safety and self-regulation in real time. Katherine Barton, LMFT offers equine-assisted therapy in Orange County, California.

Some experiences live deeper than language. You may understand what happened, and still feel it in your body: tight chest, shallow breath, sudden anger, numbness, or the sense that you're always bracing for something. These are often signs of unresolved trauma stored in the nervous system.

Equine-assisted therapy supports healing at the level where the body learns safety. In partnership with horses, we work with nervous system cues in real time, building awareness, regulation, and choice without forcing you to relive what you're not ready to revisit.

Common Reasons People Reach Out

People often choose equine-assisted therapy when they want a more experiential approach, especially when talk therapy alone hasn't felt like enough, or when the nervous system needs a different kind of entry point.

  • Trauma responses: hypervigilance, numbness, shutdown, or feeling “on edge”
  • Anxiety that shows up in the body and feels hard to calm
  • Difficulty with trust, boundaries, or emotional intimacy
  • A sense of disconnection from self, emotions, or relationships
  • Stress-related overwhelm, burnout, or chronic tension
  • Emotional regulation work for teens and young adults
  • Support after a major life transition, loss, or rupture

A Trauma-Informed, Somatic Model (Natural Lifemanship-Informed)

Equine-assisted therapy is not riding-based. It’s relational and experiential, often done on the ground with horses in a safe, structured environment. The work is guided, gentle, and paced, focused on regulation, boundaries, and connection.

Horses are highly attuned to nervous system signals. They respond to what's happening underneath words: your breath, energy, tension, and presence. This offers immediate feedback and a unique opportunity to practice new patterns in a way that can feel both clear and nonjudgmental.

I integrate somatic work, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles as appropriate. Katherine does not offer EMDR at this time.

“Katherine is amazing. Please don't hesitate, just reach out to her. She's smart, kind, and all the things you would want in a trusted partner. I recommend her highly!”

Who Equine-Assisted Therapy Can Support

I work with adults and teens, and I also see young children who have experienced traumatic events. Equine-assisted therapy can be especially supportive for clients who feel stuck in talk-based work, or who benefit from learning through experience and movement.

  • Adults seeking trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware support
  • Teens who struggle to talk openly but respond well to experiential work
  • Clients working on anxiety, boundaries, self-trust, or relational repair
  • Those who want a somatic approach to healing and emotional regulation

What Sessions Look Like

Sessions are 60 minutes and structured around safety, attunement, and intention. You’ll be guided through ground-based interactions designed to support awareness and regulation. No prior horse experience is required.

Some sessions focus on boundaries and choice. Others on connection, communication, or repair. Over time, we build your capacity to stay present with what you feel, respond instead of react, and bring those changes back into daily life.

Fees and Consultation

  • Private pay practice
  • Superbills available for out-of-network reimbursement
  • Free 15-minute phone consultation
