When the Relationship Feels Harder Than It Should

Couples counseling is relationship therapy where both partners work with a therapist to interrupt painful cycles and rebuild communication and trust. Katherine Barton, LMFT offers trauma-informed, attachment-aware couples counseling in Mission Viejo and online across California.

Most couples don’t come to therapy because they don’t love each other. They come because the way they’re trying to love each other isn’t working anymore. Conversations turn into arguments. Small moments become charged. One or both of you may feel unseen, unheard, or alone inside the relationship.

Couples counseling offers a place to pause the cycle. To name what’s happening with more clarity. And to create room for new patterns, ones built on safety, honesty, and repair.

Common Reasons Couples Reach Out

Every relationship has stress points. Therapy can help when those stress points begin to feel like ongoing disconnection or repeated conflict, especially when you've tried everything you know to try.

  • Communication breakdown or frequent conflict
  • Loss of emotional closeness or intimacy
  • Trust repair after betrayal, secrecy, or rupture
  • Repeated “stuck” patterns that never resolve
  • Life transitions: parenting, relocation, career strain, illness, grief
  • Different needs, attachment styles, or emotional pacing
  • Healing the impact of past trauma on the relationship

A Trauma-Informed, Attachment-Aware Approach

My work with couples is grounded in the understanding that relationships are nervous-system experiences. When partners feel unsafe, emotionally or relationally, protective responses emerge: shutdown, defensiveness, criticism, pursuit, distance. Over time, these attachment patterns can look like the problem, when they’re often attempts to protect something tender underneath.

Couples counseling may integrate somatic work, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support both insight and practical change. We focus on slowing interactions down, increasing emotional clarity, and building skills for repair, without forcing either partner to abandon their truth.

“Katherine is a fantastic therapist. She is empathetic, supportive, and always helps her patients see all sides of their problems.”

Who Couples Counseling Is For

I work with couples at many stages: dating, engaged, newly married, long-term partners, and co-parents. Some couples come in crisis; others come because they want to strengthen their foundation before resentment hardens.

  • Couples wanting to improve communication and conflict repair
  • Partners rebuilding trust and emotional safety
  • Couples navigating parenting stress, life transitions, or burnout
  • Relationships impacted by anxiety, depression, or trauma history

What Sessions Look Like

Sessions are 60 minutes and designed to be structured and emotionally safe. We’ll clarify goals, identify the cycle you’re caught in, and practice new ways of speaking and listening that reduce escalation and increase connection.

This work is not about deciding who is right. It’s about understanding what each of you needs, what gets in the way, and how to move toward one another with more steadiness.

Fees and Consultation

“I'm so grateful for my therapist, Katherine, and the support I've received. From the very beginning, I felt heard, respected, understood, and comfortable. She creates a safe, judgment-free space where I can be honest and work through things at my own pace. I've learned so much about myself and gained tools that truly help in everyday life. I highly recommend Katherine Barton to anyone looking for a compassionate, patient, and knowledgeable therapist.”
