A Therapist Who Works at the Pace Your Nervous System Can Trust
I'm Katherine Barton, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist serving adults, teens, children, and families throughout Orange County, California. My work is grounded in the belief that healing doesn’t happen through pressure or performance; it happens in safe, attuned spaces, over time.
Many of the people I work with are functioning well on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, or stuck internally. Others are navigating trauma, major life transitions, relationship strain, or long-standing patterns that no longer make sense. Therapy offers a place to slow down enough to listen to what your system has been trying to communicate, often for a long time.
My Clinical Background and Approach
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #53007) in the state of California, with advanced training in trauma-informed care and relational therapy. My work draws from evidence-based modalities while remaining deeply human and collaborative.
Rather than forcing insight or change, I focus on helping clients build internal safety first, because real, lasting change follows regulation, not the other way around.
My approach integrates:- Internal Family Systems (IFS)
- Somatic, body-based awareness
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Trauma-informed nervous system care
When appropriate, I also offer EMDR therapy within the scope of trauma treatment. EMDR is not used in coaching services and is reserved for therapeutic work where trauma processing is clearly indicated.
Therapeutic Philosophy
I believe therapy works best when it prioritizes safety before change. Many people have spent years pushing themselves to cope, perform, or “figure it out,” often at the expense of their nervous system. My role is not to rush insight or outcomes, but to help create the internal conditions where healing can occur naturally.
I approach therapy as a collaborative process rooted in respect for timing, consent, and context. Symptoms are not problems to eliminate, they are signals worth understanding. When clients feel supported rather than pressured, their systems begin to reorganize in ways that are more stable, integrated, and lasting.
What Therapy With Me Feels Like
Clients often describe our work as steady, grounded, and collaborative. I do not take a top-down or prescriptive stance. You are the expert on your lived experience; my role is to help you make sense of it in a way that feels safe and sustainable.
- Understanding emotional and relational patterns
- Reducing anxiety, overwhelm, and nervous-system reactivity
- Working through trauma at a pace that does not retraumatize
- Strengthening boundaries, communication, and self-trust
- Reconnecting with meaning, values, and agency
Therapy is not about fixing you. It’s about helping you relate to yourself with more clarity, compassion, and stability.
Who I Work With
- Adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, relationship strain, or life transitions
- Teens experiencing emotional overwhelm, identity shifts, school stress, or family changes
- Children and families needing support around attachment, regulation, and relational dynamics
Many of my clients are professionals in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who have spent years managing on their own. They are often navigating careers, family, aging parents, and their own health at the same time. Some grew up in a generation where therapy was not discussed and asking for help felt like a last resort. I understand that, and I respect it. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from this work. You just need to be ready for something to change.
Some clients come with a specific diagnosis or event. Others come with a quieter sense of “something isn’t right anymore.” Both are valid starting points.

Why Private Pay
This is a private pay practice, which means your therapy is not governed by insurance company requirements. There is no required diagnosis to begin, no cap on the number of sessions, and no third party deciding what kind of treatment you receive. Your records stay between us. Many clients appreciate the privacy and the freedom to work at a pace that fits their life rather than a billing cycle. Superbills are provided for those who wish to submit for out-of-network reimbursement through their insurance.
Finding the right therapist matters. A brief consultation allows us to explore fit, talk about what’s bringing you in, and determine what kind of support would be most helpful right now.
