A Space to Listen More Closely
Individual therapy is one-on-one talk therapy where you and a licensed therapist gently work through what feels stuck, painful, or overwhelming, at a pace your nervous system can trust. Katherine Barton, LMFT provides individual therapy for adults, teens, and children in person in Mission Viejo and online throughout California.
There are times when life continues to move forward, yet internally something feels unsettled. You may be functioning on the outside while carrying anxiety, emotional fatigue, or a sense of disconnection within. Individual therapy offers space to pause and begin listening more carefully to what your inner experience is asking for.
I provide individual therapy for adults, teens, and children who have experienced trauma, emotional overwhelm, or significant life stressors. The work is collaborative, trauma-informed, and guided by respect for your nervous system’s timing.
My practice serves clients throughout Orange County, including Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, and Aliso Viejo, with online therapy available to individuals anywhere in California.
What Individual Therapy Can Support
People come to therapy for many reasons, often without a single, clear explanation. Therapy can help when patterns feel stuck, emotions feel overwhelming, or your usual coping strategies are no longer working.
- Anxiety and chronic nervous system activation
- Effects of past trauma or adverse experiences
- Emotional numbness, burnout, or ongoing stress
- Difficulties with boundaries, self-worth, or identity
- Life transitions such as grief, divorce, or role changes
- Relational patterns that feel confusing or painful
A Trauma-Informed, Somatic Approach
My approach recognizes that emotional experiences live not only in the mind, but also in the body. Stress and trauma often show up through tension, shallow breathing, fatigue, or a persistent sense of alertness.
Therapy integrates somatic awareness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as appropriate. The focus is on creating safety, supporting regulation, and allowing insight to emerge gradually, without pressure or retraumatization.
“We would highly recommend Katherine Barton to anyone going through a difficult time and needing some help identifying and working through problems. She helped us through a very challenging family situation with clarity and direction. Her knowledge and guidance made all the difference.”

What Sessions Look Like
