When Relationships Feel Hard No Matter How Much You Try
Attachment therapy is a relationship-focused form of therapy that looks at how early experiences taught you to seek or avoid closeness, then helps you build steadier, safer connection today. It is available in person in Mission Viejo and online statewide in California.
Many people come to therapy believing they are “too much,” “not enough,” or somehow broken in relationships. Often, what’s actually happening is that early attachment experiences taught your nervous system how to survive connection.
Attachment therapy focuses on these early patterns, not to assign blame, but to understand how they shaped your expectations of closeness, safety, and trust. When those patterns become conscious, they can soften and change.
Common Attachment Patterns
Attachment patterns exist on a spectrum, and many people experience more than one depending on the relationship or life stage.
- Anxious attachment: fear of abandonment, people-pleasing, needing reassurance
- Avoidant attachment: discomfort with closeness, independence over connection, emotional shutdown
- Disorganized attachment: push-pull dynamics, intense closeness followed by withdrawal
- Difficulty trusting others or yourself in relationships
- Strong reactions to perceived rejection or criticism
- Repeating relationship cycles despite wanting something different
A Trauma-Informed Attachment Approach
Attachment patterns are deeply tied to the nervous system. They often develop in response to inconsistent, unsafe, or overwhelming relational environments.
I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic work, and attachment-informed psychotherapy to help you notice what happens internally when connection feels risky. We work gently with protective parts, like withdrawal, hyper-independence, or anxiety, rather than trying to override them.
When attachment difficulties are linked to trauma, additional support through Trauma & PTSD Therapy may be helpful.
“We would highly recommend Katherine Barton to anyone going through a difficult time and needing some help identifying and working through problems. She helped us through a very challenging family situation with clarity and direction. Her knowledge and guidance made all the difference.”
— Client, RichardWhat Attachment Therapy Can Support
Attachment therapy isn’t about becoming someone else in relationships. It’s about expanding your capacity for safety, choice, and flexibility.
- Greater emotional safety in close relationships
- Reduced anxiety, shutdown, or reactivity around intimacy
- Healthier boundaries without guilt or withdrawal
- Improved communication and emotional expression
- Breaking cycles of over-functioning or emotional distancing
- Increased self-compassion and internal stability
- Support for relationship stress, anxiety, or depression (see Anxiety Therapy and Depression Counseling)
Who Attachment Therapy Is For
Attachment therapy is offered for adults and teens. Some clients come because of romantic relationship struggles. Others come because attachment patterns show up in friendships, family dynamics, or work relationships.
For couples wanting to work directly on relational dynamics, Couples Counseling may be a good fit. For family systems, Family Therapy can help address attachment across generations.
What Sessions Look Like
Sessions are 50–60 minutes. We move at a pace that respects your nervous system and your readiness for change.
Some sessions focus on present-day relationship challenges. Others explore early experiences, attachment wounds, and internal parts that learned to protect you through closeness or distance. Over time, we practice new ways of relating, both internally and externally.
“Katherine is amazing. Please don't hesitate, just reach out to her. She's smart, kind, and all the things you would want in a trusted partner. I recommend her highly!”
