When Paradise Does Not Feel Like Peace
If you are searching for a therapist near Dana Point, something inside you is asking for attention. Maybe anxiety has become your constant companion, even on the most beautiful days. Maybe depression has made it hard to enjoy anything, no matter how lovely your surroundings. Maybe your relationship is struggling, or you feel disconnected from yourself in ways you cannot quite name.
I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with you for feeling this way. Living somewhere beautiful does not obligate you to feel beautiful inside. Your pain is valid, even if your life looks enviable from the outside.
Therapy is a space to be honest about what is actually happening, without pretending. I offer trauma-informed care that pays attention to your nervous system, not just your thoughts. In-person sessions are available at my office in Mission Viejo, and online therapy is offered throughout California.
“Katherine created a space where I finally felt safe and understood. Her calm presence helped me heal in ways I didn't think were possible.”
— Client, SandyThe Dana Point Experience
Whether you live near the Harbor, in Lantern Village, Monarch Beach, or Niguel Shores, you know that Dana Point has a different feel than the rest of Orange County. There is a resort quality here. A sense that life should be easier, softer, more enjoyable.
That expectation can become its own kind of pressure. If you are anxious in paradise, it can feel like you are doing something wrong. If you are sad when everything around you is beautiful, you might wonder what is the matter with you. I hear this from clients often: I have no reason to feel this way, but I do.
Here is what I have learned: your feelings do not need to make sense to be real. A morning at Doheny Beach can lift your spirits temporarily. A sunset at the Harbor can bring a moment of peace. But if there is something deeper that needs healing, no amount of scenery can do that work for you.
Therapy offers something different. A relationship where you can be truly seen. A space to explore what you have been avoiding. And gradually, the possibility of real peace, not just the appearance of it.
How I Work
I take a trauma-informed approach, which means I understand that your past shapes your present. The way you learned to cope, the experiences you carry, the patterns that once protected you, all of this shows up in how you feel and relate today. We do not have to dig into every painful memory to heal, but we do need to honor that those experiences matter.
I also pay close attention to your body. Anxiety, depression, and disconnection are not just things that happen in your mind. They live in your nervous system, your muscles, your breath. True healing involves helping your body feel safe, not just changing your thoughts.
Depending on what you need, our work together might include Internal Family Systems (IFS) to understand the different parts of you, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for practical tools, or somatic techniques to help your body release what it has been holding.
We move at your pace. I will never push you somewhere you are not ready to go. Healing is not a race. It is a process of coming home to yourself.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is a confidential space to explore what is really happening inside. You do not have to manage my reactions or take care of my feelings. You can simply be yourself, with all your complexity.
Many of my Dana Point clients come in because anxiety persists despite having a good life, because depression has made joy feel impossible, or because they feel disconnected from themselves or their partner. Some are processing experiences from long ago that still intrude on the present.
If trauma is part of your story, we approach it carefully. For those healing from sexual abuse or other deeply personal experiences, I want you to know: you will never be pushed. Safety and trust come first, always.
“Where do I even begin. My work with Katherine has been nothing short of transformational. She has held the safest, most compassionate space for me to unravel, heal, and grow into the person I am today. The IFS work we've done together was immediately powerful and has created changes that continue to ripple through my life. Through our sessions, I've been able to do deep inner child healing that has softened parts of me that were carrying so much pain for so long. Because of Katherine, I feel more connected to myself, more grounded in my body, and more trusting of my own voice. She shows up with such presence, care, and wisdom, and I always leave our sessions feeling lighter, clearer, and more whole. I am endlessly grateful for her and cannot recommend her enough to anyone who is ready to truly heal.”
— Client, AlexisCouples Counseling
Couples counseling can help when the relationship is not what it used to be. Maybe retirement or more time together has surfaced issues that were easier to ignore when life was busier. Maybe trust has been damaged. Maybe you have simply drifted apart and do not know how to find your way back.
I work with couples to slow down the reactive patterns that keep you stuck. When both people feel safe enough to be honest, something opens up. Repair becomes possible. Connection can be rebuilt.
If you are wondering whether your relationship can heal, I would gently say: many couples I work with wondered the same thing. The fact that you are considering therapy means something in you still hopes.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is helpful when issues affect multiple people in the household. That might include adult children returning home, tension across generations, grief that family members are processing differently, or transitions like retirement or relocation.
Families are systems, and when one person is struggling, everyone feels it. I help families improve communication and understand each other more deeply, without taking sides.
Intentional Living Coaching
Intentional living coaching is for people at a crossroads. Maybe retirement has left you searching for purpose. Maybe you achieved your goals and feel unexpectedly empty. Maybe you are asking yourself what you actually want from this chapter of your life.
This work is about getting honest with yourself. Clarifying what matters. Building a life that feels meaningful, not just comfortable.
“We would highly recommend Katherine Barton to anyone going through a difficult time and needing some help identifying and working through problems. She helped us through a very challenging family situation with clarity and direction. Her knowledge and guidance made all the difference.”
— Client, RichardOnline Therapy
Online therapy is available throughout California. For Dana Point residents, it can be convenient if you prefer not to drive, if you split time between homes, or if you simply feel more comfortable meeting from your own space.
I bring the same presence and attention to online sessions. What matters most is that we have a consistent, safe space to do this work together.
You Do Not Have to Pretend
One of the hardest things about struggling in a beautiful place is feeling like you have no right to struggle. Like you should be grateful. Like you should be happy. I want you to know: your pain does not need permission. It just needs attention.
I work with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and major life transitions like retirement, loss, and relocation.
If you are searching for a therapist near Dana Point because you are tired of pretending everything is fine, I would be honored to support you.
Location and Access

I also see clients from Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, and San Clemente. If in-person sessions do not fit your life, online therapy is available throughout California.
Taking the First Step
If you are considering therapy, I offer a free 15-minute consultation. It is a chance to share a little about what is going on and see if working together feels right. There is no pressure.

Whatever you are carrying, you do not have to carry it alone. Real peace is possible, not just the kind you see from your window.
